「産地」

鹿児島県屋久島の標高５００mを超える山地に自生している天然のスギ。


「特徴」

屋久島の杉の中でも樹齢1000年を超えるものを「屋久杉」と呼びます。

木目が鮮明で上杢の笹目模様がでている事から格別の美しさがあり、複雑な木目でも狂わないという特徴があります。材は硬く、通常の6倍ほどの樹脂分を含んでいるため防腐・抗菌・防虫効果があり、加工後も独特の香りが残ります。

現在伐採禁止となっているため、禁止以前の材や倒木(間伐材)のみの流通で、非常に希少な高級木材である。


「色調」

心材は赤味を帯びた茶褐色を呈する。


「用途」

建具材や建築の天井板、落とし掛、欄間や家具、工芸品などの高級材として使われる。
