●栗瘤/くり

木材としても非常に優れ、銘木として扱われます。

木目のしっかりした環孔材で、磨くと光沢が出て硬く弾力性もあり狂いも少ない。

非常に保存性に優れており、耐湿性も高いため、木造家屋の土台や浴室に昔から最も使われてきました。さらに、防腐剤を使用しないで使える唯一の建築材として現在も重宝されている。

この特質から栗の木を身近に置くと腐らずに頑張れる…と言われている。

日本の数寄屋の世界ではその素朴で優しく、存在感のある表情が特に好まれ、使用されている。

辺材は狭く、褐色を帯びた灰白色。心材は褐色。材はタンニンを多く含み、年数が経つと徐々に濃くなり栗色から黒褐色に変化する。年輪は明瞭。

About the Wood: Japanese Chestnut Burl (Kuri)

Japanese Chestnut has long been treasured in Japanese architecture and craftsmanship for its moisture resistance, anti-decay properties, and structural strength. Even without preservatives, this wood has been used in traditional house foundations and bath areas.

The burl wood, with its distinctive rich brown and grayish tones, showcases an elegant swirling grain. Over time, the tannin-rich wood deepens in color from chestnut to a dark brown patina, enhancing its natural character.

In traditional Japanese tea house design (sukiya style), chestnut is favored for its humble yet distinguished appearance. The belief that chestnut promotes longevity and resilience makes it a meaningful material for personal items and gifts.
