木目が鮮明で上杢の笹目模様が現れることから格別の美しさがあり、複雑な木目でも狂わないという特徴があります。材は硬く、通常の6倍ほどの樹脂分を含んでいるため防腐 抗菌 防虫効果があり、加工後も独特の香りが残ります。
現在は伐採禁止となっているため、禁止以前の材や倒木 間伐材のみが流通し、非常に希少な高級木材です。

色調は心材が赤味を帯びた茶褐色を呈し、落ち着きのある佇まい。屋久杉は建具材や建築の天井板 落とし掛 欄間や家具 工芸品などの高級材としても用いられ、日本の木工文化を象徴する存在です。

Logging is currently prohibited, so only materials sourced before the ban, or naturally fallen or thinned wood, are available, making Yakusugi an extremely rare luxury wood in Japan.
