黒檀は非常に重く硬い材で、加工が難しいとされますが、そのぶん耐久性に優れています。

色調は、辺材が淡い赤色を帯び、心材は黒色と淡赤色の帯びが交互に配列して縞目を有します。稀に真っ黒なものもあり、本黒檀または真黒 まぐろ と称します。
縞杢を有したものは縞黒檀 しまこくたん と呼ばれ、英語では Macassar Ebony として知られています。

This model uses Kokutan, Japanese ebony. Ebony is regarded as one of the most prestigious hardwoods, and in Japan it is traditionally grouped with sandalwood and ironwood as the three famous karamoku woods. Historically, high grade timber was imported to Japan via China during the Tang period, and ebony became known as a luxury material for fine craftsmanship. Its deep black appearance creates a calm, refined impression for those who prefer understated elegance.

Regarding origin, Southeast Asia was once the main producing area, but today Africa is often the main source, and striped ebony with brown and black tones is commonly seen. Due to past harvesting of very dark ebony, it is sometimes described as a precious resource that may become scarce in the future, which adds to its rarity appeal.

Ebony is extremely dense and hard, making it difficult to machine, yet it offers excellent durability. With use, it can develop a richer gloss, and the grain that appears within the dark surface is one of its key attractions. In terms of color, the sapwood may show a pale reddish tone, while the heartwood can feature alternating black and slightly reddish bands, creating a striped pattern. Rare pieces can appear almost completely black, sometimes referred to as hon kokutan. Striped varieties are known as shimakokutan, and internationally they are widely recognized as Macassar Ebony.
